The NCCA have published the new specifications for Leaving Cert Physics, building on the draft specs that were published last year.
The plan is for them to be introduced to 5th year students next September (Sept 2025), so that they will examined for the first time in summer 2027.
There will be an additional assessment component (AAC) worth 40%. Quoting from the document: ...'It involves students completing a piece of work during the course and, in Year 2, submitting for marking to the State Examinations Commission (SEC), evidence of their ability to conduct scientific research on a particular issue and to use appropriate primary data to investigate aspects of that issue.'
An Investigation Brief will be published annually by the SEC in term two of year one of the course. (i.e. Students get the brief in spring of 5th year and complete the investigation - which it is envisioned will take up to 20 hours - during the 6th year.
